TOPIC-MILITARY OFF TO AN EXCELLENT START IN AUGUST

The Trauma Outcomes and Performance Improvement Course-Military inaugural course was presented in San Antonio on 19 August 2007.  The TOPIC-M course was modeled after the TOPIC course developed in 2003 by STN in response to the need to better understand outcomes management in trauma center development and care. The military approached the STN leadership in January 2006 to create a military-specific course with emphasis on echelons of care and combat casualty-specific case scenarios.  Air Force Col Donald Jenkins approached Connie Mattice, STN TOPIC chair, and Kathleen Martin, TOPIC faculty, to develop the course and carried out the MOU to initiate the course.  The curriculum was modified from the original TOPIC course and revised by content experts from various military treatment facilities from Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany with review by the TOPIC committee.

The inaugural TOPIC-M course included participants from all military branches of service and facilities including members of the United States Army, Air Force, Navy and civilian sectors as well as members from Veterans Affairs, Army training facilities, Air Force training facilities such as CSTARS, representatives from the Institute for Surgical Research and from three Joint Theater trauma registry program managers; trauma medical directors from Air Force and Navy; trauma program managers from Army, Air Force, Navy and civilian; trauma PI coordinators from Air Force, Navy, and civilian; trauma registrars from Navy and civilian; and a director of nursing from Army. Participants traveled from Texas, Florida, Ohio, Maryland, District of Columbia, Japan and Germany. Level 1 and 2 trauma centers were equally represented.

Requests have already been made to implement the course on a routine basis for trauma coordinators deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan, for Navy personnel deploying to Germany, in Cincinnati at CSTARS, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, and in military treatment facilities in the capital area. The course is taught in a nurse/physician tandem faculty with seasoned military trauma performance improvement experts.  There are currently four instructors: Col Donald Jenkins, Tracy Cotner-Pouncy, Rosie Bolenbaucher and Kathleen Martin.

The inaugural course is considered a huge success and there is discussion of taking the course to the senior military leadership and military treatment facilities worldwide.
