There is noted increased awareness of the issue of healthcare violence. Healthcare workers experience workplace violence at rates significantly higher than other industries per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Types of violence range from verbal abuse to physical assaults. Workplace negatively impacts the mental health and wellbeing of healthcare workers, leading to increased stress, burnout, and job dissatisfaction. This webinar will serve to increase awareness about the prevalence and impact of workplace violence in healthcare and regulatory requirements and legislation.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify factors which have influenced the current state of workplace violence within the healthcare environment.
  • Discuss regulatory requirements and legislation.
  • Demonstrate best practices for minimizing workplace violence within healthcare facilities.

John Oast, MS, CHPS is the Director of Security Training and Security Programs for the Police and Security Operations Department at the Geisinger Health System and Board Member-at-Large for the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety. John completed his undergraduate studies at George Mason University and his Masters of Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati. He started his law enforcement career in the mid 1990’s, specializing in youth crime, elder fraud, and law enforcement instruction, and transitioned into Healthcare Security following his tenure with the Richmond City Sheriff’s Office in Virginia, where he had been a Lieutenant, Community Relations Director, Human Resources Officer, and academy instructor.

In his role at Geisinger, he leads all public safety and workplace violence training for the organization and is the Health System’s lead drug diversion investigator. He was instrumental in establishing the department as a hybrid sworn law enforcement public safety agency, developed the department’s Field Training Program, and received the IAHSS Program of Distinction award.

John has presented on various healthcare and public safety topics around the United States and internationally, including to the American Medical Association and various hospital associations and healthcare organizations. He is a Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator and is the Board Liaison for the IAHSS Education Council.
